DUTCHESS COUNTY FARMHOUSE
This 4,500sf extension to a 19th century farmhouse achieves a playful dialogue between traditional and contemporary expressions. The extension mimics the footprint and bulk of the existing house but is pared down to a minimal volumetric form. Linked to the existing house through a glass circulation atrium, the extension is skewed six degrees from the axis to capture advantageous views to the northwest. A large cantilevered second story perches over a covered porch. The materality of the existing house – horizontal siding, a masonry foundation, and a shingle roof – becomes reinterpreted and elegantly refined through its juxtaposition with the more contemporary extension.
