SOJOURNER TRUTH STATE PARK
Baird Architects joined the multidisciplinary team led by OLIN to help develop a comprehensive framework plan transforming 520 acres of former industrial land along the Hudson River into what is now Sojourner Truth State Park—an initiative advanced by Scenic Hudson. From this broader planning effort, the Barge Dock Pavilion emerged as a modest yet purposeful intervention along a former dock once used for the transport of brick and cement.
Conceived as a direct expression of structure, the pavilion pairs slender Corten steel columns with a low-carbon cross-laminated timber roof plane. The canopy frames views to the river while maintaining a restrained presence within the landscape, providing shade and gathering space along the Empire State Trail. A compact enclosure beneath the roof supports park maintenance.
Designed with accessibility, durability, and environmental stewardship in mind, the pavilion establishes barrier-free access to the waterfront and is detailed to accommodate a future photovoltaic array, reinforcing the park’s long-term sustainability goals.

Named for 19th century African American abolitionist and suffragist Sojourner Truth, this new state park is the first state park in the City of Kingston. Sojourner Truth State Park offers spectacular views of the Hudson River, historic industrial ruins and remnants from brick making and quarrying, and diverse habitat areas including woods, wetlands, and steep cliffs and ridge line.
